Updated: Jun 26, 2020

In Pinefallow Park, each member begins with one character. After the first event of the story, you can include a second character.

Every member of Pinefallow Park is obligated to begin with a human parolee character. For your second character, you can either make 1) another parolee, 2) an employee of Pinefallow Park such as a doctor or handyman, or 3) a magickal creature who lives at the sanctuary.

That being said, the parolees are the main characters of this group. Every event is crafted to tell their story. There may be certain events where there's not quite as much for magical creatures or park employees to do.

How to Create Your First Character

Since you will be starting with a parolee, begin by considering what kind of person you want to be. The only hard and fast rules are that 1) your first/main character must be human, and 2) for some reason they need to have been in the prison system in the United States.

Just because your character has committed a crime does not mean they have to be a bad or mean person. The crime is up to you (although we do not want characters who have committed hate crimes of any sort.) We encourage you to be creative! It can be anything from cat burglary to impersonating a nun to infiltrate a museum.

There are two mandatory elements to a Pinefallow Park application: the written app and the visual app. If you aren't an artist, that's perfectly fine! We do not judge admission based on the visual app, only the written one. Click the visual app to read more instructions on how to fill it out:

What About Magick?

Pinefallow Park is all about magick. Magick is the lifeblood of the story. That being said, there are some limits. Parolees are required to be entirely human, with no powers.

Overall, parolees should have no knowledge of magick's existence. Maybe they've encountered a weird unexplainable circumstance, but they don't realize that fantasy is real. That being said, if you have a really strong idea for your character having some knowledge of magick, ask! We're totally okay with making exceptions on rare occasions; we don't bite. The worst we can say is no!

Does this mean that my parolee will never be magickal or interact with magick? Absolutely not! There is a whole magickal world you're about to inhabit... and it may change you in surprising ways. But the story will function more cleanly if magick unfolds slowly, instead of characters beginning with powerful abilities.

What Crimes Are Permissible?

We won't accept hate crimes or special victims crimes. Basically, we are not looking to populate this group with irredeemable assholes. While moral ambiguity is totally welcome, should you so choose, evil-aligned characters will probably not fare well here. Along those lines, your parolees are also free to be good people! Encounters with the legal system don't inherently turn people into monsters.

Other than that, more or less any crime is permissible, but we would love wacky creativity. Maybe they tried to steal the Crown Jewels... maybe they succeeded at stealing the Crown Jewels! Truly, feel free to be as simple or wild as you want when dreaming this up.

It also doesn't have to be entirely realistic in terms of how the crime would be prosecuted! You don't have to study law to get this right; fudging it is completely fine. Instead of being on parole, this could also be the mandated community service, a replacement for juvie, etc., etc..

If you want to run something by us or get some help, feel free to shoot us a message.

Written Application

Feel free to fill out the written app however you'd like. Copy/paste it into the description of your visual app, make a Google Doc, heck, make a PowerPoint! You have complete freedom of design.

If you would like to keep any of this information secret from your fellow members, that's perfectly fine! You can have a public document and a private document. But you need to provide us all of the information with nothing held back.

How to Create Your Second Character

As soon as the tutorial is over, you will be permitted to make a second character! This can be another parolee, in which case all of the above applies -- or it could be a sanctuary employee or a magickal creature.

How to Create a Park Employee

Park employees can be human, or they can be any magickal creature that can fit in a house.

The first thing you need to decide about your character is how they came to work at Pinefallow Park. They could have come from the outside world in some manner or another -- or they could be ex-parolees who the Warden invited to stay once their time was up.

All manner of roles are needed at the sanctuary, such as doctor, handyman, groundskeeper, chef...

Taken roles:

  • Warden/Keeper

  • Second-in-command

  • Head Researcher

To make a park employee, fill out the same written app as the parolees and this special visual application:

How to Create a Magickal Creature

The world is mostly your oyster when it comes to magickal creatures, but there are some exceptions. The following magickal creatures will have plot relevance, so please speak with us about your ideas before forming one of these species:

  • Centaur

  • Dragon

  • Fae

  • Demon

Otherwise, feel free to be creative! You can even make up your own magickal species!
